📖 In This Guide

I’ve spent more evenings in Fulton Market than I can count, and honestly? I still get excited every time I walk down Randolph Street. There’s an energy here that you just don’t find anywhere else in Chicago — the smell of wood-fired something drifting out of every other doorway, the hum of packed patios on a summer night, the constant buzz of a neighborhood that’s always evolving.

Fulton Market — Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood — has become the undisputed epicenter of the city’s dining scene. What was once a gritty meatpacking district is now home to Michelin-starred tasting menus, celebrity chef flagships, and some of the best casual eats you’ll find anywhere. Restaurant Row on West Randolph Street is the main artery, but incredible spots have spread throughout the entire neighborhood.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic date night, a fun group outing, or a solo adventure, this neighborhood delivers. Here are the 20 restaurants I think are absolutely worth your time.

💡 INSIDER TIP: Fulton Market’s Restaurant Row is the bustling strip of West Randolph Street between Halsted and Ogden Avenue. This is where you’ll find the highest concentration of acclaimed restaurants. But don’t skip the side streets — some of the best spots are tucked away on Fulton, Lake, and Green Streets.

Why Fulton Market Is Chicago’s Hottest Food Neighborhood

A quick history lesson: West Randolph Street became a produce market in the 1850s, and by the 1950s, Fulton Market was the center of Chicago’s meatpacking industry. Many of those original warehouses have been transformed into restaurants, galleries, and boutiques — often keeping the raw industrial character that gives the neighborhood so much personality.

Today, this is where Chicago’s most ambitious chefs want to open. The area has multiple Michelin stars, a James Beard Award winner on practically every block, and new concepts opening all the time. It’s also home to the corporate headquarters of McDonald’s and Google’s Midwest campus, which means the lunch crowd is serious about food, too.

And the Fulton Market bakeries are incredible, too — but that’s a whole other guide.

The Best of Restaurant Row

1. Girl & the Goat

📍 809 W Randolph St | 🍽️ Global/New American | 💰 $$$ | Reserve

If you only have one dinner in Fulton Market, make it this one. Top Chef winner Stephanie Izard’s flagship restaurant is the place that put this neighborhood on the culinary map, and over a decade later, it’s still one of the hardest reservations in Chicago — for good reason. The bold, globally inspired flavors are unlike anything else in the city. The goat empanadas are iconic, and the rotating menu means there’s always something new to try. It’s loud, it’s lively, and the food is extraordinary.

💡 INSIDER TIP: Can’t get a reservation? Try the bar — they hold seats for walk-ins. Also check out Izard’s other Fulton Market spots: Duck Duck Goat (Chinese), the walk-up Baobing Bar (seasonal shaved ice and soft serve), and Little Goat Diner across the street for brunch.

2. Au Cheval

📍 800 W Randolph St | 🍔 Upscale Diner | 💰 $$ | Walk-in only

I’m going to come right out and say it: Au Cheval serves the best burger in Chicago. Possibly the best burger in America. Juicy patties, melted cheese, thick-cut bacon, and a fried egg on top — it sounds simple, but it’s absolutely perfect. You can also order other dishes like fried chicken, matzo ball soup, foie gras scrambled eggs, and bone marrow with toast. Be prepared to wait for a table — this place is always packed, and they don’t take reservations.

💡 INSIDER TIP: The wait can be 1–2+ hours on weekends. Put your name in, then grab a drink at The Aviary or Lazy Bird nearby. If you want the same burger with a shorter wait, try Small Cheval — Au Cheval’s fast-casual sibling with locations in Lincoln Park, Old Town, and Wicker Park.

3. Rose Mary

📍 932 W Fulton St | 🍽️ Italian-Croatian | 💰 $$$ | Reserve

Top Chef winner Joe Flamm’s debut restaurant has been one of the most coveted reservations in Chicago since it opened in 2021 — and the buzz hasn’t slowed down one bit. Inspired by his Italian heritage and the bold, bright flavors of Croatian cuisine, Rose Mary is refreshingly light and airy with a large open kitchen featuring a custom-built charcoal-fired hearth. The cevapi (grilled sausages) are outstanding, the stracciatella with smoked pear butter is unforgettable, and you’ll find a really cool list of Eastern European wines you won’t see anywhere else.

4. Leña Brava

📍 900 W Randolph St | 🌮 Mexican/Live-Fire | 💰 $$$ | Reserve

Rick Bayless is a Chicago legend, and Leña Brava — “ferocious firewood” — might be my favorite of his restaurants. Everything here is cooked over an open hearth and wood-burning oven, celebrating the multicultural cuisine of Baja California Norte. The raw bar is exceptional (try the agua chiles), the wood-fire empanadas are incredible, and the mezcal collection is one of the best in the city. They also now serve lunch, which is a great way to experience it without the dinner crowds.

5. Aba

📍 302 N Green St | 🫒 Mediterranean | 💰 $$$ | Reserve

Even by West Loop standards, Aba is a scene — but it’s a scene that comes with genuinely fantastic food. This Lettuce Entertain You spot focuses on shareable Mediterranean plates: lamb chops, skirt steak, chicken kefta, incredible spreads and hummus, and warm pita that keeps coming to the table. The real draw, though, is the stunning rooftop patio. It’s gorgeous year-round (yes, even in winter — they heat it), and it’s the perfect spot for a long dinner with a glass of wine and the Chicago skyline twinkling around you.

6. Bar Siena

📍 832 W Randolph St | 🍕 Italian | 💰 $$ | Reserve

The little sister of the popular Siena Tavern in River North, Bar Siena offers a full menu of regional Italian fare — from gnocchi with prosciutto sausage to an amazing truffle mushroom pizza. The seasonal menu changes every few months, so there’s always a reason to come back. I love the interior: two stories with a large opening in the center of the bar, with a pretty tree sculpture lighting up the entire room. The sprawling outdoor patio is one of the best on Restaurant Row.

💡 INSIDER TIP: Bar Siena has a great private dining space on the second floor if you’re hosting an event or a larger group dinner.

7. Duck Duck Goat

📍 857 W Fulton Market | 🥡 Chinese | 💰 $$ | Reserve

Another Stephanie Izard gem, Duck Duck Goat serves what she calls “reasonably authentic” Chinese food with a creative twist — and that’s a perfect description. The duck fried rice, goat slap noodles, shrimp toast spring rolls, and Peking duck are all excellent. Cocktails inspired by Chinese ingredients and flavors round out a fun, energetic experience. In summer, don’t miss the walk-up Baobing Bar next door for inventive shaved ice and soft serve.

8. Carnivale

📍 702 W Fulton St | 🎉 Latin Fusion | 💰 $$–$$$ | Reserve

If you’re in the mood for a festive, colorful experience, Carnivale is your place. This Latin fusion restaurant celebrates the cuisine and culture of Mexico, South America, and Central America — and it’s one of my favorite spots to bring visiting family and friends. The empanadas are some of the best in the city. You’ll also find ceviche, paella, and churrasco, along with exotic cocktails, wines, and sangrias. On select nights, there’s live music, dancing, and entertainment. It’s a party, and everyone’s invited.

9. Nobu

📍 155 N Peoria St | 🍣 Japanese | 💰 $$$$ | Reserve

For a sophisticated and elegant night out, Nobu Chicago is hard to top. Located on the rooftop of the Nobu Hotel, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Chicago skyline alongside exquisite sushi, sashimi, and Nobu Matsuhisa’s signature dishes — black cod miso, yellowtail jalapeño, and wagyu beef are all phenomenal. The rooftop terrace makes it one of the best date night spots in Chicago.

10. Gaijin

📍 950 W Lake St | 🥞 Japanese | 💰 $$ | Reserve

If you’re a fan of okonomiyaki — the savory Japanese cabbage pancake — you’ll love Gaijin. They specialize in this dish with creative varieties like pork belly, shrimp tempura, mushroom truffle butter, and even a cheeseburger version. You can also order takoyaki (octopus balls), yakisoba, karaage (fried chicken), and mochi. And please, please try the sake slushies. They’re as fun as they sound.

Beyond Restaurant Row: More Must-Try Spots

11. Monteverde

📍 1020 W Madison St | 🍝 Italian/Pasta | 💰 $$$

If you love pasta, Monteverde is a pilgrimage. Chef Sarah Grueneberg makes some of the best handmade pasta in the entire city — the cacio e pepe with fresh bucatini and pecorino cheese is legendary. Every noodle is made in-house, and you can watch the pasta team at work through the glass. It’s cozy, the service is warm, and it’s the kind of meal you’ll be thinking about for weeks. Reservations are released a month in advance, but the bar holds seats for walk-ins.

12. The Publican

📍 837 W Fulton Market | 🍺 American/Beer Hall | 💰 $$–$$$

A Fulton Market institution. The Publican pays homage to beer, pork, and oysters in a space that feels like a European beer hall. Chef Paul Kahan’s eclectic menu features locally sourced seafood, meat, and vegetable dishes, plus an incredible craft beer selection. Don’t miss the famous oysters or their brunch. Across the side street, Publican Quality Meats is a must-visit for artisan sandwiches, house-made breads, and over 300 retail food items.

13. Ever

📍 1340 W Fulton St | 🌟 Fine Dining/Tasting Menu | 💰 $$$$

For a special occasion, Ever is one of the most extraordinary dining experiences in Chicago. Chef Curtis Duffy’s two-Michelin-starred restaurant offers a multi-course tasting menu that’s as visually stunning as it is delicious. The space is serene and elegant, the service is impeccable, and every single course is a work of art. This is bucket-list dining.

14. Boqueria Fulton Market

📍 807 W Fulton Market | 🇪🇸 Spanish Tapas | 💰 $$–$$$

This Spanish tapas bar offers a seasonal menu of beautiful small plates that are perfect for sharing. The patatas bravas, jamón ibérico, and grilled octopus are all excellent. But whatever you do, don’t leave without trying the Tarta Vasca De Queso — a Basque cheesecake served with apple compote that is absolute perfection.

15. The Allis at Soho House

📍 113-125 N Green St | ☕ American/European | 💰 $$–$$$

Located inside the trendy Soho House, The Allis serves brunch, lunch, and dinner with a mix of American and European dishes. The chic atmosphere and cozy seating make it a great spot for a date or catching up with friends over craft cocktails. The brunch is particularly good — and the people-watching is unbeatable.

16. Lyra

📍 905 W Fulton Market | 🇬🇷 Upscale Greek | 💰 $$$–$$$$

One of the most beautiful restaurants in the neighborhood, Lyra brings upscale Greek cuisine to Fulton Market. Think wood-grilled whole fish, mezze spreads, and lamb dishes in a stunning space that channels a sun-drenched Mediterranean villa. The cocktail program is excellent, and the atmosphere is perfect for a celebration or a special date night.

17. Green Street Smoked Meats

📍 112 N Green St | 🍖 Texas-Style BBQ | 💰 $$

Step up to the counter at this no-frills Texas-style BBQ house for one of the best pulled pork sandwiches in the city. The brisket is smoky and tender, and the sides are solid. But here’s the real secret: head to the basement, where you’ll find High Five Ramen — one of the most popular ramen spots in Chicago, hidden below the BBQ joint. Two meals in one building? That’s a Fulton Market move.

18. Beity

📍 Fulton Market | 🇱🇧 Lebanese | 💰 $$$

“Beity” means “my home” in Arabic, and this Michelin-recognized Lebanese restaurant captures that warmth beautifully. Innovative takes on Lebanese flavors — think elevated kibbeh, lamb dishes, and creative mezze — are served in an elegant but comforting space. The cocktail program has earned its own Michelin recognition, too. Open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday.

🆕 Exciting New Openings for 2025–2026

Fulton Market never stops evolving. Here are the newest spots generating serious buzz:

19. Bar Tutto (Opened late 2025)

📍 1110 W Carroll Ave | ☕🍝 All-Day Italian Café | 💰 $$

Joe Flamm just keeps winning. His newest concept is an all-day Italian café inspired by the lively wine bars lining Italy’s piazzas. Mornings start with a dedicated coffee program and Italian pastries (the prosciutto croissants and bombolinis are already legendary). Lunch and dinner bring fresh pastas — the bucatini in beef sugo has a perfect al dente bite — paninis, and seasonal mains like pork collar with peaches and polenta. Late-night spritzes and wine round out the experience. Already one of my new favorites.

20. Fire (Opened 2025)

📍 951 W Fulton Market | 🔥 Live-Fire/New American | 💰 $$$–$$$$

The Alinea Group’s newest concept is generating serious attention. Anchored by a live-fire hearth, Fire pushes the envelope with dishes like cured halibut, smoked apples, and showstopping mushroom preparations. Coming from the team behind three-Michelin-starred Alinea and The Aviary, expectations were sky-high — and they’re delivering.

Also On My Radar

il Carciofo (Joe Flamm’s Roman Italian, opened Dec 2024 — made Condé Nast Traveler’s 2025 Hot List) | Taqueria Chingón (bold tacos, reopened at 817 W Fulton Market in 2025) | Hokkaido Ramen Santouka (authentic Japanese tonkotsu ramen at 160 N Halsted) | BLVD Steakhouse (Old Hollywood glamour meets premium steaks) | Osaka Nikkei (Peruvian-Japanese fusion, opening 2026 at 1101 W Lake St)

🆕 COMING FALL 2026: Gibsons Tavern is opening at 919 W Fulton St — the iconic Chicago steakhouse group’s new 15,000-square-foot concept promising elevated American tavern fare with Prohibition-era cocktail vibes. This is going to be huge.

Good to Know Before You Go

Getting there: The CTA Green and Pink Lines to Morgan Station drop you right in the heart of Fulton Market. If you’re driving, street parking is limited — paid garages along Randolph Street and Fulton Market are your best bet. Rideshare works great for evening dining.

Reservations: For popular spots like Girl & the Goat, Rose Mary, Monteverde, and Aba — book 2–4 weeks ahead, especially for weekend dinners. Some spots (like Au Cheval) are walk-in only. Most restaurants accept reservations through OpenTable or Resy.

Best time to visit: Weekday dinners (Tuesday–Thursday) are generally easier to get into. Summer brings incredible patios and rooftop dining. Winter is great for cozy date nights with shorter wait times at popular spots.

Budget tip: Lunch is significantly more affordable at most Fulton Market restaurants, and many spots (like Leña Brava and Bar Tutto) now offer lunch service. Happy hours on weekdays are another great way to experience these restaurants without a splurge.

What to wear: Most Fulton Market restaurants are smart-casual. You don’t need a suit or heels, but you’d feel underdressed in athletic wear at places like Nobu, Lyra, or Ever. For casual spots like Au Cheval or Green Street, anything goes.

Fulton Market is a neighborhood that rewards the curious eater. Whether you’re here for a bucket-list burger, a life-changing bowl of pasta, or a Michelin-starred tasting menu, this is one of the greatest food neighborhoods in America. Happy eating, Chicago. 🍽️
