As a native Chicagoan with Italian roots, I feel immensely lucky to have so many incredible Italian dining options in Chicago’s Gold Coast.
A Guide to Gold Coast’s Italian Restaurant Scene
The Gold Coast area is an absolute hotbed of rustic cucina, brimming with cozy trattorias and sophisticated enotecas channeling the true flavors of Italy. These are six of my personal go-to spots for getting an authentic taste of la dolce vita without leaving the neighborhood.
Experience la dolce vita: Casual Comfort Food & Homey Classics
Eduardo’s Enoteca
Address: 1212 N Dearborn St
For a swanky yet low-key night of sampling Italian vinos and savory small plates, Eduardo’s never lets me down. This intimate, dimly-lit enoteca serves some of the most authentic cicchetti in the city alongside an exceptional, curated list of bottles. It’s my go-to for indulging in everything from crispy arancini to creamy burrata with a date or couple of friends.
Mario’s Table
Address: 21 W Goethe St
Whenever I’m craving a homey, no-frills Italian experience, Mario’s Table is my move. This family-owned gem hidden among the tree lined streets of the gold coast neighborhood is home to a warm, welcoming vibe and classic menu of house-made pastas, rustic entrees and wood-fired pizzas. Scoring a coveted sidewalk table during summer is the ultimate for soaking in the lively Gold Coast scene.
Upscale Ambiance & Modern Takes: Refined Italian Cuisine with a Twist
La Storia
Address: 1154 N Dearborn St
La Storia somehow manages to elevate simple, seasonal Italian fare without sacrificing warmth and comfort – hallmarks of the cuisine I grew up with. Between the house-made pastas, fresh crudo and lush sidewalk patio, it channels the essence of a Tuscan escape.
Adalina
Address: 912 N State St
For modern, refined Italian with a deliciously inventive twist, this chic-yet-unpretentious restaurant is tough to top. I’m endlessly impressed by how Adalina manages to put such an elevated, creative spin on classics without losing their soul. From bright crudo plates to impossibly flavorful handmade pastas and wood-fired entrees, every dish packs a major punch. Don’t sleep on their thoughtful wine program either.
Savor the Spirit of Italy: Family-Style Feasts & Hearty Portions
The Rosebud on Rush
Address: 720 N Rush St
For over 20 years, this Chicago institution has been treating diners to lavish, hearty portions of classic Italian-American comfort fare. Come hungry for family-style platters of saucy chicken parm, meatballs, and fettuccine Alfredo served alongside crusty bread. Don’t miss taking a photo outside their iconic sign out front.
