Shake off the icicles, grab your board or skis, and get ready to hit the slopes — because skiing near Chicago is better than most people think. No, you won’t find Colorado-sized mountains. But you will find legitimate ski hills with snowmaking, terrain parks, night skiing, tubing, and that unbeatable Midwestern friendliness — all within 90 minutes of downtown.
We’ve been skiing these hills since our kids were small enough to wedge-pizza down the bunny slope, and we’ve watched them grow into places worth a real winter day trip. Here are the seven best spots for snowboarding and skiing near Chicago — with drive times, what to expect at each one, and an interactive map to plan your trip.

⛷️ In a Nutshell: There are seven ski hills within 90 minutes of Chicago, spanning Illinois and southern Wisconsin. The closest are Four Lakes (40 min) and Villa Olivia (45 min) — great for after-work runs and beginner lessons. Four Lakes Alpine Snowsports — The Closest Run
📍 5750 Lakeside Dr, Lisle, IL 60532 | 🚗 40 min from Chicago via I-55 | 🌐 fourlakessnowsports.com
If you grew up in DuPage County, you probably know someone who learned to ski at Four Lakes — and now in its 55th year, it’s still the most convenient option for a quick after-work session or family weekend trip. Five trails, seven tow ropes, and a terrain park (The Alley) with 10 rotating features including a Corrugated Pipe, Flatbar Rail, Wide Box, and Skinny RQ Box make this a solid spot for both beginners and freestyle riders.
Four Lakes is a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America, so the lessons are legit. They have a full lodge with restaurant, bar, cafeteria, and Wi-Fi. Check the site for special events like Super Snofest, held annually in mid-February.
Hours (2025–26): Mon–Thu 4–9 p.m. | Fri 4–10 p.m. | Sat 10 a.m.–9 p.m. | Sun 10 a.m.–7 p.m.
💡 INSIDER TIP: Four Lakes regularly has Groupon deals — lift ticket plus rental for around $25 (normally $54). It’s one of the best ski deals near Chicago. The hill tends to open later in the season than the Wisconsin resorts, so check their site before making the drive.
Villa Olivia — Best for Families Learning to Ski
📍 1401 W Lake St, Bartlett, IL 60103 | 🚗 45 min from Chicago via I-290 | 🌐 bartlettparks.org/villa-olivia
Run by the Bartlett Park District, Villa Olivia is a great option for families and first-timers. Seven runs, one quad chairlift, six rope tows, 100% snowmaking, and a terrain park keep things interesting for all skill levels. The hill also has two tubing runs (around $30–$34 for a 2-hour session, ages 6+) — tubing is hugely popular here, so book online in advance or you risk showing up to sold-out sessions.
Villa Olivia offers ski and snowboard lessons for all ages through patient instructors. Taking lessons here is a smart way to start — you’ll learn proper technique, ski etiquette, and how to enter and exit the chairlift safely. There’s a Ski Café serving hot food and drinks, plus a full bar.
2025–26 Season: December 19 – approximately March 1 (weather permitting)
Hours: Thu 5–9 p.m. | Fri 5–10 p.m. | Sat 9 a.m.–10 p.m. | Sun 9 a.m.–8 p.m.
💡 INSIDER TIP: Arrive at least one hour before your lesson to check in, get fitted for rental equipment, and meet your instructor. Private and semi-private lessons can be booked by calling (630) 540-4161. Buy 3-ticket bundles online to save.

Wilmot Mountain — The Best Overall Ski Hill Near Chicago
📍 11931 Fox River Rd, Wilmot, WI 53192 | 🚗 75 min from Chicago via I-94 | 🌐 wilmotmountain.com
This is my favorite place to escape the city in winter. Self-proclaimed the “Matterhorn of the Midwest,” Wilmot Mountain has been operating since 1938 and is now owned by Vail Resorts, making it part of the Epic Pass family. That means your Epic Pass, Epic Local, or Epic Day Pass works here — a huge perk if you also ski out west.
Wilmot has 21 slopes, 11 lifts, and about 200 feet of vertical drop. The terrain is wide open with few trees, so you can traverse several runs while skiing downhill. The terrain park has a full mix of beginner to advanced boxes, rails, and jibbing features. Night skiing is available on the entire hill. Their ski and ride school has over 300 certified instructors, and helmets are required for all children and teens in lessons.
The tubing operation is separate (different entrance, different parking lot — important to know!) with 20 lanes over 1,000 feet long and a covered conveyor lift. Book in advance. Check their events calendar for Kringle Time (free weekend snacks — because Wisconsin), Glow Nights, and race events.
💡 INSIDER TIP: Lift tickets are always cheaper online in advance and they do sell out on busy weekends, so don’t wait. Wilmot is on the Wisconsin–Illinois border — the longest run, “State Line,” literally parallels the state line, with a small section at the top technically in Illinois. 🇺🇸

Alpine Valley Resort — The Biggest Vertical Near Chicago
📍 W2501 Co Rd D, Elkhorn, WI 53121 | 🚗 90 min from Chicago via I-94 | 🌐 alpinevalleyresort.com
Alpine Valley has the most legitimate vertical drop of any ski area near Chicago — nearly 400 feet across 90 skiable acres with 12 uniquely challenging runs. Fourteen lifts (including a quad, five triples, and three doubles) keep the lines moving, and there are three terrain parks for different skill levels. Night skiing runs seven days a week when conditions allow.
What sets Alpine Valley apart is the on-site resort hotel with 110 rooms at the base of the hill, making it one of the only places near Chicago where you can do a true ski-in, ski-out weekend. The hotel has an indoor heated pool, an outdoor pool, an arcade-style game room, and a movie room — all great for kids after a day on the slopes. Dine at the Alpine Bistro without leaving the resort.
💡 INSIDER TIP: Alpine Valley is popular with both Chicago and Milwaukee skiers, so weekends can get crowded. If you’re staying at the hotel, hit the slopes early before the day-trippers arrive. Weekday skiing here is a completely different (much quieter) experience.
The Rock Snowpark — Affordable & Fun for All Levels
📍 7011 S Ballpark Dr, Franklin, WI 53132 | 🚗 90 min from Chicago via I-94 | 🌐 rocksnowpark.com
Known locally as “The Ditch” (it’s reportedly built atop a former landfill — only in the Midwest), The Rock punches above its weight with eight slopes, a 230-foot vertical, and a terrain park across 75 skiable acres. A double chair lift and rope tows get you back to the top. The vibe here is unpretentious and affordable — regulars describe it as “yeah, it’s small, but it’s ours.”
The Rock uses a “Terrain Based Learning” approach for beginners — specially shaped snow features that naturally control speed and body position, removing the traditional fears of first-time skiing. It’s a genuinely smart way to learn. And if skiing’s not your thing, try Glow Tubing — the runs are lit up with colors at night and it’s a blast.
Hours: Mon–Thu 4–9 p.m. | Fri 1–9 p.m. | Sat 10 a.m.–9 p.m. | Sun 10 a.m.–8 p.m.
💡 INSIDER TIP: The Rock shares its property with the Milwaukee Milkmen baseball stadium. In summer, it transforms into the Milky Way Drive-In outdoor movie theater. A true four-season spot.

The Mountain Top at Grand Geneva — The Full Resort Experience
📍 7036 Grand Geneva Way, Lake Geneva, WI 53147 | 🚗 90 min from Chicago via I-94 | 🌐 grandgeneva.com
Voted #1 Midwest Resort by Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards in 2025, Grand Geneva is the ultimate ski weekend getaway from Chicago. The Mountain Top has 20+ downhill runs, a 6-acre terrain park, three chair lifts, two carpet lifts, and 100% snowmaking across 211 feet of vertical. Fun fact: the slopes date back to the 1960s when the Playboy Club occupied this site — the terrain is essentially unchanged and somehow still a blast despite being objectively small.
Beyond skiing, Grand Geneva offers ice skating, sledding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and a Burton Riglet Park designed for young children learning to snowboard. New this season: if you don’t feel like being outside at all, the resort has a full spa with massages, facials, and wellness services. The perfect weekend getaway for families who want options.
Hours: Mon–Thu noon–8 p.m. | Fri–Sun 9 a.m.–9 p.m. (holiday hours may extend)
💡 INSIDER TIP: The “Stay and Ski Free” package gives you two free lift tickets when you stay Sunday–Thursday. Midweek evening specials offer $35 lift tickets and $50 lift-plus-rental Mon–Thu from 5–8 p.m. Kids 6 and under ski free with a rental purchase. Seniors 65+ get half-price tickets. All lift tickets and rentals must be purchased online before arrival.
Alpine Hills Adventure Park — Tubing, Bonfires & Snow Fun
📍 4402 Larson Ave, Rockford, IL 61108 | 🚗 90 min from Chicago via I-90 | 🌐 alpinehillsadventure.com
Alpine Hills is a five-acre snow park with a different vibe than the bigger resorts — it’s more about outdoor winter fun than serious skiing. The terrain park is good for practicing tricks, and they make their own snow, so you don’t have to depend on natural conditions. Rentals are available if you don’t have your own gear.
The real draw here is tubing with bonfires — a combination that makes for an excellent group outing. If you’re looking for a casual winter adventure rather than a full ski day, Alpine Hills delivers.
